Rob Roy Glacier

We decided that the hike to Rob Roy Glacier was so magical that it needed its very own blog post.   This hike is about 55 km outside of Wanaka.  You drive up the gorgeous Matukituki Valley which is a fully agricultural valley with mountain peaks on every side and of course your fair share of sheep, cows, and deer (venison is raised here and is big on the menu and mighty tasty, and may I add that Merino makes both a lovely sweater and an even better sausage).  The hike runs along a fast-running river with boulders the size of small homes.  The first picture is of me standing on the swinging bridge where the hike starts.  Many of the hikes start off like this, which can be a bit intimidating but provide for some spectacular views.  We then meandered up a lovely trail surrounded in Beech forest. After a couple of small stream crossings you arrive at this amazing wildflower filled hanging glacial valley.  Of course given, that it is summer and the current climate condition the glacier is melting and creating a bowl of waterfalls that cascade down and feed the river that you just meandered up.  This is an amazingly special place.

Well, we are off again.  We are leaving Wanaka behind and are going to head up the Haast Pass and over to the west coast where we will probably be welcoming rain and sand flies back into our lives with open arms.  J

  1. These pictures are so wonderful. Don't think we could have done the swinging bridge with the kids....i can see them swinging from side to side and ME freaking out. Love the pic with the glacier and wild flowers. NZ has such beauty. We went through Hasst during some terrible rain but it made for gorgeous water falls!
How are you liking the camp grounds? Have fun my friends!
