Christchurch Earthquake

We have received a number of e-mails asking about the earthquake.  Thanks for your concern.  We are fine.  Christchurch is located centrally on the east coast of the southern island and we are currently on the northern part of the west coast of the southern island.   If you are not aware, Christchurch had a major earthquake in September of 2010, which has been followed by about 5,000 aftershocks.  This earthquake was not as strong as the one in September but was much closer to the surface so the damage is very severe and there have been fatalities.  We watched some news footage today and you can tell that people are very shaken up by the events of today and that there is going to be a huge amount of clean up.  Our plans are to arrive in Christchurch on 3/22 and fly out of Christchurch on 3/29.  These plans may change but we will not be inquiring for some time.  For those who asked, thanks for thinking about us, and keep the people of Christchurch in your thoughts.

  1. Extremely glad to hear you two are well clear of the affected area. I watched some of the video coverage on YouTube--the damage is extensive and people are clearly unnerved, pouring into the streets to avoid rubble and falling debris. Amazing amount of damage--to people and structures. Good that you won’t be traveling to that part of the country for some time. Be safe.

  3. I watched CNN World News late last night and the earthquake was all they were covering for the hour I watched. They were reporting new info. as it came in and I imagine went on all night. Lots of interviews and home videos and buildings we recognized were destroyed. We figured you were safe--so glad to see your message, tho. Hard to imagine such a quiet, lovely city in such turmoil and distress.
